Congratulations to Ian “Kanga” Cairns, who has just been promoted to the position of Coaching Director for Surfing America.  Surfing America’s executive director, Greg Cruse, says, “In addition, Ian will be spearheading our rollout of the ISA Coaching and Instructor Certification program and a series of SUP events that will be the USA SUP Team Trials.”  Assisting Kanga with his newly appointed role will be Ryan Simmons and PacSun USA Junior Surf Team Coach and Micah Byrne as PacSun USA Junior Surf Team Assistant Coach.  Check out the full press release below, compliments of Surfing America:

San Juan Capistrano, Calif. – JUNE 6, 2012 – Surfing America’s executive director, Greg Cruse, has announced that the national governing body of surfing in the United States has promoted PacSun USA Surf Team Coach, Ian “Kanga” Cairns, to the position of Coaching Director for Surfing America.

Cruse stated, “Since I became executive director last July, Surfing America has embraced all of the opportunities offered to us by our NGB granting authority, the International Surfing Association. This included not only sending USA teams to the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships and the ISA World Surfing Championships, but adding participation in the ISA World Masters Surfing Championships, the ISA China Cup, and the ISA World Stand-Up Paddle and Paddleboard Championships.” Cruse added, “Ian has risen to the challenge, bringing home a Gold Medal in the Masters, a Silver Medal in the SUP/Paddleboard and a Bronze Medal in the China Cup competitions, plus a Copper Medal for the Junior Team”.  Cruse continued, “In addition, Ian will be spearheading our rollout of the ISA Coaching and Instructor Certification program and a series of SUP events that will be the USA SUP Team Trials”.

To assist Cairns, Surfing America has hired Ryan Simmons as PacSun USA Junior Surf Team Coach and Micah Byrne as PacSun USA Junior Surf Team Assistant Coach. “I have been very frustrated with our Junior results over the past three years and feel that a new set of eyes are needed to get the best from our talented surfers. Greg and I see these changes as a very positive direction for Surfing America and I am looking forward to grappling with my expanded duties,” said Cairns. Simmons is a two-time PSTA US Champion and has won three Association of Surfing Professionals World Qualify Series events. His best rankings on the WQS were 23rd and 25th in the world. He has been a surf marketing manager for . . . Lost, Katin Surf Shop Team Manager and past USA Surf Team assistant coach under Joey Buran. Currently Ryan is a surf contest announcer, highly regarded for his knowledge of competitive surfing and the competitors. He has been an elite surf coach since retiring in 2004 and did 3 years at Newport Harbor as head surf coach.

Micah Byrne is a USA Surf Team alumni, surfing in the ISA World Surfing Games in Peru in 2010. He also is a four-time NSSA National Champion, four-time NSSA Season Champion, winner of Vans Pier Classic, 2008, winner of Macy’s Trifecta Series, 2009, and Winner of the SurfRide Freedom Series, 2010. He has also been a well-known surf contest announcer since 2006, a Hurley International Team Rider from 1999- 2006, an independent professional surfing coach and a staff coach for DSC Surf Training. He is the Surf Marketing Manager at DC Shoe Company. “On behalf of Micah and myself we are thrilled for the challenge ahead. This young crop of surfers in America has tremendous talent and to be able to work with this “new crew” will be exciting and rewarding. We look forward to the year ahead,” said Simmons.

The new PacSun Junior Team Coaches will waste no time getting started. They will be running a scrimmage for team members at 9th Street in Huntington Beach, June 8, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM to help prepare the kids for the Rip Curl Grom Search the following day, plus the USA Championships and NSSA Nationals at the end of June.
