With attendance expected to break 12,000 people, another round of Surf Expo, the industry staple that began over 35 years ago in 1976, wrapped up its latest edition in Orlando, Florida this weekend, welcoming members of the surf, skate, wake, and other watersports industries from across the US, Central and South America, Canada, Europe, Australia, and beyond.

The halls were packed with over 2,400 brands, and while many are staples of the show, there were numerous new brands. Some of the rookies that caught our eye included myPakage, SoloShot, and HDX.  “Our first show was a huge success,” says HDX Founder Vipe Desai. “I don’t think we could have asked for a better first show.”

While many at the show felt the dates don’t work any more for Spring lines since the show is so late in the summer trade show season, other brands used the show as a platform to debut their Summer lines, and all of the apparel brands we spoke to that took that route said they saw a great response.

Day three got off to a groggy Saturday start following Friday night’s industry party, sponsored by Sanuk and benefitting the SIMA Humanitarian Fund’s Stokes Me program. The event was hosted at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park, where RVCA took home bragging rights at the suf comp and the industry took over the private park’s rides and slides.

At the end of Day 2, buyer attendance was up 16% from last summer’s show, with more than 6,000 buyers on hand viewing more than 2,400 lines.

Surf Expo officially gets underway tomorrow morning, September 6, at 8 am, but we couldn’t wait to get in there and get a sneak peek of what’s new this summer and to rehearse for the TransWorld Business Swimwear and Junior’s Surf Expo Fashion Show, taking place Thursday and Friday at 4 pm . Surf Expo gets under way this Wednesday with a full range of events and brands that have us fired up to head to Orlando. Things kicks off with the annual Outdoor Demo at the Orlando Watersports Complex before the show starts in earnest on Thursday. We’re fired up for the second annual TransWorld Business Swimwear and Junior’s Surf Expo Fashion Show on Thursday and Friday, Thursday’s TransWorld Wake Awards, and Friday night’s industry party, sponsored by Sanuk and benefitting the SIMA Humanitarian Fund’s Stokes Me program.
