Founded in 1965 by Robert Smith, a Sun Valley orthodontist by trade and a skier by passion, Smith Optics made its name by creating the first double-lens goggle with breathable foam—a true fog-clearing, game changer for the slopes.

From humble beginnings of building those first goggles around the kitchen table and trading them for lift tickets, Smith has exploded over the last nearly half a century, moving into multiple sports and categories including sunglasses and helmets, boasting offices in Florence, Italy; Hossegor, France; and San Clemente, California, where its surf and MotorSports operations are based.

While the company’s gear is now sold in over 50 countries around the world, its corporate headquarters are still located in Ketchum, Idaho, a short walk from Sun Valley’s River Run base area.

We had the chance to get a tour of the company’s nearly 26,000 square-foot building from Marketing Director Tag Kleiner:
