Mountain High Resort CEO and President Karl Kapuscinski has purchased all remaining shares in the Mountain High Resort tenant-operator firm, making him the majority owner of the company that leases from CNL Lifestyle Properties Inc., a real estate investment trust that owns Mountain High plus 21 other ski and mountain properties. Kapuscinski has served as the resort’s top executive for the past 14 years, according to a press release issued by Mountain High:
“Karl is a visionary in the ski industry and we are happy that he will continue to lead Mountain High as owner of Mountain High Resorts Associates,” said Byron Carlock, president and CEO of CNL Lifestyle Properties Inc., a nontraded real estate investment trust (REIT) that owns Mountain High Resort and 21 other ski and mountain lifestyle properties.
Mountain High is Southern California’s most popular winter destination servicing roughly 500,000 guests annually. The area consists of three separate resorts (East, West, & North) and offers night skiing, an award-winning Winter Sports School, and two world-class terrain parks. Last season was the resort’s most profitable on record and spanned an incredible 188 days, the longest in Mountain High’s history.
The trend continues this season with the mountain’s early opening and strong pre-season sales. Mountain High opened Thursday, November 11th, making it the first resort to open in Southern California for the 14th year in row. Riders are expected to flock to Mountain High this winter to experience The Beast, the new top-to-bottom terrain park at the area’s East Resort. 1.6 miles of jumps and jibs will make it one of the longest parks in the country, and Mountain High one of the most sought after resorts in the region.
Says Kapuscinski, “This is a dream come true. I am extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished over the past 15 years. But I’m even more excited about what we and CNL Lifestyle Properties can achieve in the future. I’ve made this commitment to Mountain High Resort Associates to ensure that Mountain High provides the best experience for skiers and snowboarders in Southern California.”
Kapuscinski has been involved in the ski industry for more than 20 years. He has served as president of the California Ski Area Association, was a board member of the National Ski Area Association for six years and was among the first class of recipients for the prestigious SAMMY award from Ski Area Management magazine in 1998.
