We checked in with Owner and Designer, Meagan Scott, who gave us a detailed look at how the brand has been building its growth in sales and distribution, both stateside and internationally.

What trends will we see in next year's line? (colors, cuts, fabrics, etc.)

I think we might see a very bold color scheme. Lots of brights with an 80's vibe mixed with some vintage inspired geometric prints. I think only the classic OG fringe will stick around and you'll see a more simplistic body with radical colors and prints. And it's seeming like that teeny tiny bottom is in high demand as well! Can't make them small enough these days at least that is the case for the West coast bikini wearing maniacs.

What is the overall state of the swimwear market from your perspective? What changes are on the horizon?

You know, the market has welcomed some new amazing designers and brands the last few years. I'm sure it's giving larger labels a bit of a jult and a lot of pressure to be innovative and more of a trend leader. It's no joke out there right now! Consumers know what they like and are going for it when it comes to their bikini purchase. I think it's an extremely important time to support your brick and mortar shops. We can't forget about them! Online shopping is all time right now. Boys and Arrows is choosing the "less is more" approach when it comes to the web. Supporting our online retailers and helping them grow our label rather then selling to every wholesale inquiry we get from a new online retailer. That way brick and mortars prevail and our current online accounts kill it with B+A. Just because there is not a physical address with online accounts doesn't mean you shouldn't control distribution.

This summer we saw the emergence of the “festival wear” trend with many brands, speaking to the youth, music festival scene and demographic. What pop culture trends do  you see being ushered in next summer?

The festival wear girl is wild! These girls are going big when it comes to their attire from the polish on their toes to the flowers in their hair. I mean I am pretty sure there are even outfit changes going on throughout the day. Brands are well aware of this and offering "looks" to their consumers rather then products. Bikinis are already becoming more of something you wear under your clothes instead of a bra and panties and I think that will continue to grow. They cost enough so these girls are putting them on the second they get up regardless of if they will end up in a body of water or tanning. Swimwear is not for swimming these days. And that is fine with me! I support living in your bikini.

Are you seeing continued expansion and sales growth around the separates category for 2014? Why or why not?

Absolutely. It wouldn't even make since for us to sell sets. Mixing and matching is in. Doesn't matter if your top is from Boys+Arrows and your bottoms are from target. And it doesn't even matter if they match! I am a matching freak but girls these days don't seem to care.

What changes are you seeing on the business side? – Are you seeing changes in order sizes, the length of the season, sales channels, etc.?

For us buyers are going deeper into each style and color which is great. When you give the consumer to much to work with everyone just gets confused. We are definitely seeing bigger orders with a smaller style list. I was just talking with my west coast sales rep Tina Storch about how each season is so unpredictable. How long the season will run depends on so many things. If people are traveling, the economy, the weather and the list goes on! But for the most part it's always summer somewhere so there is not much downtime on our end.

What were your greatest successes for 2013?

Well personally, if I actually survive it. Check back with me at the end of the year! And for Boys+Arrows we have tripled our brand placement and added on a few amazing countries as well like France, Brazil and Canada. I absolutely love opening up new countries to the brand. Nothing makes me happier.

What are your sales projections for next season? Lets just say we are hiring. We have an incredible collection in the works and have done some serious developing of new bodies and prints. Can't wait to launch in Miami this year!

What additions are you making for next year? What won't we see as much of?

We are dabbling in a lot of new and innovative concepts when it comes to swim along with some fabulous cover ups and camping attire. Fringe is something we will still offer in our Henrietta the Hooligan top and Blythe the Babe top with some minor changes to these bodies but that is it, no more fringe in development! On to the next thing.

Where are prices and margins heading for you? (What will your average MSRP and margin percentage be?)

Welp. Being that we are made in America it's really hard to compete financially with brands that mass produce in China. But I won't give up on making it work here in Los Angeles. I have the most amazing team of people who work so insanely hard to make these bikinis. I will not be increasing my MSRP and even hope to lower it a bit! The more we grow the more we can negotiate our COG's and of course plan to have that trickle down to the consumer. Our margins are good. Hope to make them even better and stay made in America.

Is the number of SKU's in your line expanding or contracting? Why?

The number of sku's slowly expands with us from year to year. This is because we always have new bodies and a lot of times drop old ones or replace them. I'm sure once we have more man power and expand the sku's will grow much more rapidly
