OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE – (ENGLEWOOD, CO) SEPTEMBER 15, 2008, – Airwalk®, the leading action sports lifestyle brand, is proud to announce the winner of the year's most innovative web-fueled battle of the bands contest, the 2008 Airwalk Unsigned Hero, Road to Austin. The promotion gives one talented, unsigned band the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play at SPIN Magazine's Showcase during the 2009 music conference in Austin, Texas. Thousands of Airwalk supporters and fans voted for the finalists via Airwalk.com, electing the nation's top unsigned band, The Monthlies.
Formed in January of 2007, The Monthlies are a Los Angeles based indie rock outfit. Sometimes dark and loud, other times poppy and breezy, The Monthlies are always deeply melodic and memorable. Playing in and around LA just about every week, the band has quickly earned a reputation for their energetic live performances. The Monthlies are a three guy and one gal ensemble: Wes O'Lee on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jana Bonderman noodling lead guitar, Nick Miller pounding the skins and Chris Hall playing bass and singing back-up vocals.
“We were shocked when Airwalk let us know that a fan had submitted The Monthlies for the contest and that we had actually made it to the final 20,” said Jana Bonderman of The Monthlies. “Now, to have won the grand prize and be playing in Austin? We keep pinching ourselves to make sure this isn’t a dream.”
Additionally, James Lanman, a solo rock/pop/electronica act took second place, while third place was a tie between a progressive/breakbeat/hip hop act, System Addict, from Orange County and a punk rock band, The Automatix, out of Montreal.
The promotion included an innovative on-line voting module that launched in late July on www.airwalk.com and via Airwalk's MySpace page giving fans a chance to vote for their favorite band out of the twenty that made it to the finals. In addition, bands and fans had their shot at scoring an Airwalk engraved iPod Nano for nominations and votes. The winners, however, collected much more including an all-expense paid trip to the largest music conference in Austin, Texas in March 2009, the opening spot on a SPIN stage, and spending cash. Second place took $1,000 while the third place winners each received $500.
