However Kelly, as usual, might be the exception to the surfing rule. Whilst being known as a relatively healthy species, surfers also aren’t usually afraid to settle their post-surf hunger with traditional fare of breakfast burritos, fish tacos for lunch or burgers washed down with beers for dinner.
At the Vegan Surf Camp, however, you’ll have a much better chance of eating macrobiotic Miso rather than a meat pie for your post-surf munch. The camp only uses organic, quality, seasonal and local products to minimize any environmental impact. Each camp runs for one week (between the 2nd of July and 27th of August) at Moliets-Plage, a beach resort located between Arcachon and Hossegor about 100 miles south of Bordeaux. The surf is only a ten minute walk away from the camp, with surf instructors and all equipment available on site. Along with the organic vegan only fare (the vegan buffet is a daily highlight for guests), there are other activities offered to increase your well being. Yoga is held twice a day (for around $5 a lesson) and there are cooking workshops, run by a kitchen crew who are all graduates of the Macrobiotic Institute of Boston. Of course it’s not just all serious health stuff, there’s also a bar on site – and you can make of what you will that one of the camp partners is a German condom company. However, if you surf and are a vegan (or simply just want to see what its like for a week), the Vegan Surf Camp is the only option for you. You never know, Kelly Slater might be one of your fellow guests.
