Huntington Beach, California, March 29, 2002 (NYSE:ZQK) Quiksilverannounces the official end of the waiting period for the Quiksilver “Men WhoRide Mountains” Big Wave Event at Mavericks, Half Moon Bay, California, asof March 31, 2002.

Event director and Mavericks founder and surfer, Jeff Clark, has monitoredthe swell and weather patterns at Mavericks since December 8th, waiting forthe necessary conditions that would create the most favorable competitionday. Despite extensive preparation and tremendous anticipation, the2001-2002 winter season failed to deliver the light variable winds, andconsistent 20 plus foot waves that would constitute what Clark would callthe “perfect Mavericks day.” Clark commented, “There hasn’t been one daythis year that we had waves consistent enough throughout the day to producecontestable waves. A minimum of six hours of consistent surf is necessaryto successfully hold this event. And of course, the most important variableis size.”

Although Mavericks saw some historically sizeable days this winter, at bestthere were mere four-hour windows of good surf that occurred until wind orrain quelled any hopes for calling the event. As Clark explained, “As Mavssits in Northern California, it receives the brunt of the biggest stormswhich hit the jagged coastline head on. The giant waves and the weathercombine to make this a fickle surf spot, but when it’s good, there’s nothingbetter.”

Bob McKnight, Chairman and CEO of Quiksilver Inc. said, “We know the eventwill not take place every year. The unpredictability is what makes thisvenue so special. Mavericks is one of the biggest and most powerful wavesin the world where the most skilled surfers face a very tough challenge. When it does go, some of the greatest all time moments in big wave surfingcan be witnessed.”

“We look forward to next year, and are ready to pull the trigger andshowcase the world’s big wave riders and the handful of those born surferswho made the commitment to come learn how to negotiate this giant wave,”said Clark.

Stay tuned for next winter when the waiting period for the 2002-2003Quiksilver “Men Who Ride Mountains” at Mavericks begins in November 2002.
