After a glorious 20+ years of surfing around the world on the ASP World Championship Tour, Carlsbad, California’s Taylor Knox called it quits at a raucous gathering behind Cafe Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu. The who's who of the surf industry was on hand to send off one of surfing's favorite sons. Kelly Slater gave a speech recalling Taylor's infamous "boneheaded" decisions in heats, Mick Fanning shared a bunch of funny stories of their time on the World Tour, and fellow Carlsbad surfer Sal Masekela emceed the evening. And while it was called a "retirement" party, Taylor is far from done. Consider Taylor's retirement a rebirth of sorts—those patented power carves that we've all grown to love ain't going nowhere! According to the man himself, he'll be filming for movie and video parts, surfing places he's always wanted to go, competing in select events, and perhaps giving power surfing clinics to those in need (you reading that kids?).
