Unlike snowboarding and skateboarding, surfing is generally not often done ‘switch’, as it is inherently difficult enough with countless variables and limited opportunity, compared to the aforementioned sports, and thusly it is quite rare to see impressive acts done on a surfboard in a switched stance. Surfing requires far too much focus to learn even once, let alone twice.

Think about it. What’s the most impressive thing you’ve seen in surfing, switch? Jamie O’brien has done it in the barrel at Pipeline. Slater did it getting tubed during a heat at the Rip Curl Search event at Padang Padang 3 years ago, Slater also traded opening switch rides whenever he had a heat with Shane Dorian, but to my knowledge, I haven’t seen somebody complete a legitimate ‘trick’ switch-stance. Til now.

At the 1:36 mark in this little rip clip from Albee Layer, filmed for his Nike Chosen crew video, he non-chalantly (sarcastic claim included) lands a chop hop, a ollie 180/poor man’s alley-oop, which in itself isn’t incredible, but he does it SWITCH. I”ve never seen anyone do something remotely progressive with their opposite foot forward. I challenge you to throw a football with your other hand without looking like a 11 year old girl. That’s what I thought.
