Double Dipping At The Bay: Twin brothers Kiva and Tide Rivers share a gaping double barrel at Honolua Bay on Maui
If you have a brother that you frequently surf with you know that they're fair game to burn, stuff, roast, or heckle. It’s awesome—he's the one dude in the lineup that the normal rules don't apply to. Check out this sequence of the Rivers twins (Kiva is the regular foot and Tide the goofy) from Maui "sharing" a freight train barrel at Honolua Bay.—Justin Coté
TransWorld SURF: What prompted you guys to attempt this?
Tide Rivers: My brother got the better of me on a wave a week prior to this and I kinda had it out for him after that. So I dropped into this wave and tried to fade him with a couple check turns, but he wouldn't straighten out. If you look at the picture, its kinda funny, my eyes are looking to the right, and my brother's eyes were looking toward the left—we didn't look at each other the whole time and I had no idea he was in the barrel with me. After we got spit out and the mist cleared up, I saw my brother like a foot away from me and I was like "Whatttt?!" and gave him a high five. It was a pretty funny ride…
So it wasn't a planned occurrence?
No. I mean I knew he was on the wave with me, I knew he had dropped in and all that. But I did my little fade thing and thought I had taken care of business, but he still weaseled behind me [laughs] He was on a bigger board than me so that helped him.
Are you guys planning on taking this show onto the road? Teahupo'o or Pipeline perhaps?
Funny question—I don't see why not! We've ridden a couple barrels together before but this one was one of the better one's we've gotten. Wherever I am, my brother seems to be right behind me or right in front of me.
So who came out of the womb first?
My brother, Kiva.
But you came out of the barrel first, you got that on him.
Yeah, I came out of the barrel first.
Do you have any last words of wisdom for our readers here?
Go for it—you never know until you go! That, and I'd like to thank Dooma, he's been really taking care of the boys over here and has been getting some great shots, so thanks Dooma!
