More and more of surfing’s most talented surfers are coupling-up and hitting the professional surfing world as power couples.
They say “teamwork makes the dream work,” and the following six duos have so much raw talent (and high cheekbones), that their futures are certainly all looking bright.
Tatiana Weston-Webb and Jesse Mendes
This Hawaiian-Brazilian power duo includes Kauai’s Tatiana Weston-Webb finished fourth in the rankings in 2016 (in just her second full year on tour), and won her first Championship Tour (CT) event at the Vans US Open of Surfing.
The 20-year-old is dating the Brazilian ripper Jesse Mendes. The two have been traveling the world together as he also tries to qualify for the elite tour.
He missed out on making the all important top 10 by just three places last year, but seems destined to join his girlfriend and make it to the big stage soon.
Connor O’Leary and Stephanie Single
O’Leary will be one of only six rookies on the elite WSL tour in 2017. The 24-year-old has a Japanese mother and a father of Irish decent, but has lived all his life in Cronulla, Australia.
His girlfriend is Stephanie Single, a former Australian Junior Champion who surfs on the Qualifying Series (and has a very promising competitive future) is trying to emulate the success of her partner.
O’Leary recently moved up to Single’s hometown of Lennox Head, where the two goofyfooters share the right-hand pointbreaks and dreams of championships.
Kanoa Igarashi and Teresa Bonvalot
Young love’s dream, Kanoa Igarashi, 19, and Teresa Bonvalot, 18, represent two of surfing’s most promising talents.
Igarashi just had his first full year on the CT, and finished the year with a remarkable second place standing at the Billabong Pipe Masters. He met his Portuguese girlfriend on the WQS series, where she too is starting to make her mark.
Bonvalot has finished third and fifth in the last two World Junior Championships, and many experts see her as Europe’s hottest prospect. Early days for the young lovebirds, but the future looks very bright indeed.
Monyca and Ola Eleogram
The Eloegram's have a good claim to be surfing’s hottest married couple.
Monyca and Ola grew up on the same street and were high school sweethearts. Both professional surfers, they have since married and, in between surfing trips for their sponsors, now spend their time growing organic vegetables at their home on Kauai.
Bruna Schmitz and Dane Zaun
Pro surfing’s newest married couple, the Brazilian model and surfer Schmitz married the LA based freesurfer in 2016.
Both goofyfooters, Schmitz put in two years on the elite World Tour in 2009 and 2010, and off tour featured in Sports Illustrated 2011 Swimsuit Issue.
Zaun also competed on the WQS, however both have been off the competition scene for a few years, and instead travel the world together, making clips and generally living a honeymoon-like existence … all year round.
Alana Blanchard and Jack Freestone
Not exactly a new edition, but no surfing power couple list would be complete without Jack Freestone and Alana Blanchard.
Blanchard has stepped back from her competitive career to focus on her modeling and TV commitments. That has meant more time with her long term beau, Freestone, who had his first full year on the CT in 2016.
The couple is so photogenic that it makes your eyes bleed, and so talented in the water that it almost makes you sick. Heaven help us if they ever have kids.
