While it might not seem likely — as we’ve reported before — a bunch of action sports stars are huge golf fans. As it turns out, professional golfer Davis Love III is also a pretty big fan of the action sports world, although maybe too much of a fan: As the Golf Channel reported, the 52-year-old golfer broke his collarbone in three places this week while snowboarding in Idaho.
Love — who captained Team USA to its first Ryder Cup victory in eight years in September — was riding at the Sun Valley Resort in Idaho earlier this month when, per his manager, he made a fatal flaw: He tried to keep up with his 23-year-old son, Dru.
“Davis said, 'I committed the cardinal sin of following Dru down the mountain,'” Mac Barnhardt, Love’s manager, told the Golf Channel.
Love was flown to Birmingham, Alabama, where a surgeon inserted a plate and eight screws into his collarbone, according to the Golf Channel. He was originally scheduled to play in next week’s Sony Open in Hawaii, but the injury will keep him sidelined for three months.
This is hardly Love’s first foray into the world of action sports: He frequently posts photos to Instagram showcasing his love for standup paddleboarding and surfing, and opened a dual golf/standup paddleboarding shop on St. Simons Island, Georgia.
