Following a massive 2014 merger with the nearby Canyons Resort, the Park City Mountain Resort in Utah is set to open this week as the largest ski resort in the United States.
Late last year Vail Resorts Inc. purchased the Park City Mountain Resort for a cool $182.5 million to join its property with that of the nearby Canyons Resort in order to create the largest U.S. ski resort.
On Saturday, that plan will finally come to fruition.
“People have been talking about connecting resorts in Utah for a long time, but we were able to make it happen,” Bill Rock, Vail’s chief operating officer, told the Deseret News. “Park City has all the ingredients to be one of the best ski resort destinations in the world. It’s gotten a lot of attention from around the world — rightfully so because Utah’s got the greatest snow on Earth and now the biggest resort in the United States.”
With the merger, skiers and snowboarders can now access 17 peaks across 41 lifts. The addition of the Canyons to Park City brought the total trail count to over 300, giving skiers and snowboarders more than 7,300-acres to enjoy.
In addition to the $182 million merger, Vail has spent another $50 million improving trail and snowmaking conditions, and has connected the two resorts with an eight-person high speed gondola, making it easy to switch between the two areas.
With opening day just around the corner, skiers and snowboarders have taken to Twitter using the hashtag #oneparkcity to express their excitement:
