On Dec. 8, 2018, everything changed in an instant for Roberta Walker and her husband JP, one of the most influential snowboarders to have ever done it. Roberta was hit from behind by a large truck while riding her bike in Encinitas, California. The terrible irony of the incident is that Roberta was a major advocate for cyclist rights and safety in the San Diego community.

According to those close to Roberta:

She was wearing a helmet with a large light on the back. There was reflective gear and a headlight on her bike and she was traveling in a bike lane. She suffered catastrophic injuries that included a traumatic brain injury, a fractured skull, two burst fracture vertebraes, nine broken ribs, a broken clavicle and sacrum.

She was immediately rushed to a trauma center and underwent major surgery to save her life. She was induced into a medical coma and has been fighting for her life. So far she has undergone two brain surgeries and two spine surgeries and experienced many complications due to the critical nature of her trauma.

Before this tragic incident, Roberta was the epitome of health, with a life dedicated to wellness and plenty of time spent in the water and in the mountains. Photo: Courtesy of TransWorld SNOWboarding

The situation is serious, and any help you can offer will help chip away at the massive financial burden imposed by a medical and insurance system that often leaves those in the worst circumstances facing insurmountable costs.
