The 2013 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season got off to an eye-opening start at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, Saturday night with Davi Millsaps claiming his first victory since 2010. In a stark contrast to the last few years, which have been dominated by a select few riders, this year it looks like there will be much more of a revolving door on the way to the podium.

Millsaps’ victory is a big sign that the field of viable contenders is larger than ever this year, thanks to some comeback players like himself. Since his last win in San Diego, Millsaps has been plagued by injuries, while the likes of Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, Chad Reed, and James Stewart have had a virtual lockdown on the podium.

Yet more evidence came in the form of runner-up finisher Trey Canard, who is apparently back in top form after breaking his back during last year’s series. Canard is certainly no stranger to injury. He’s broken his arm and both legs (at different times), yet the redheaded Oklahoman keeps coming back for more, and looks as hungry as ever. Naturally, if he can stay healthy he’s a very real threat for 2013.
