On Aug. 2, pro motocross rider Robbie Maddison shocked the world when he teamed up with DC Shoes to release “Robbie Maddison’s Pipe Dream,” a short video showcasing a specially modified dirt bike that Maddison used to surf the massive waves of Tahiti.
That video made international headlines and has been viewed more than 20 million times since it was uploaded to YouTube.
Maddison called the video edit “by far the most ambitious project I have pulled off,” and it seems that those beyond the action-sports industry tend to agree: The video has been nominated by YouTube and The Webby Awards for a YouTube Ad of the Year Award.“The best ads of 2015 have made us all laugh, cry, think and feel inspired,” YouTube wrote in the description of the awards. “YouTube has partnered with The Webby Awards to select 25 of the most iconic ads of 2015, based on this year’s YouTube Ads Leaderboard. The standings have been turned off to keep up the suspense. Keep voting and check in [Dec. 9] when the winners will be announced!”
Currently one of five entries in the “YouTube Ads You Wish You Were In” category, Maddison’s video is squaring up against a group of ads that includes, among others, the Lexus hoverboard video.
