Factory KTM | The Machines

Every year when the new season of racing begins, one of the best parts about Anaheim One is the debut of each manufacturer's race weapons. Each machine is hand built to rider preference, and the detail and assets invested are unparalleled. We cruised the pits the Friday before race day and shot photos of each of the six major manufacturer's factory 450 and 250 class efforts. We’ll be posting galleries throughout the week of the big six with some bike details included. Sit back and enjoy the factory freshness.

Factory Husqvarna

Yesterday we kicked it off with Rockstar Racing Husqvarna, and today we will continue “The Machines” with their related family member, team Redbull KTM and their 450 and 250 class offerings. The number one machine of Ryan Dungey has been the bike to chase for the rest of the field this last year, and with a new re-style and a few improvements on last year’s model the 450 SX-F is one of the sharpest looking bikes in the paddock. Also thrown in is another KTM backed program you’re all familiar with: Team BTO Sports KTM. We shot a few of Justin Brayton’s race weapon, and a shot of Millsap’s air shock.

This year the announcement of KTM naming Troy Lee Designs as their factory 250 effort was a huge deal for the California based team. With this honor comes five team riders, and the opportunity to race both coasts in the 250SX class. They also have their own factory edition model, available to the public now. Both bikes are certainly lookers, and the photos below will show you just that. (Page to the bottom for a full gallery)

Titanium, everywhere. Check out these new low profile titanium brake rotor bolts, not to mention that axle nut that allows no dirt in to clog the axle.

On the other side, you can see the same Akrapovic carbon fiber chain guide that Husqvarna runs, along with a custom axle block and capped axle hole also to prevent dirt from jamming inside. The matching orange sprocket and hub combo is also a clean look.

Akrapovic also provides them with full titanium systems for the race bikes.

KTM’s are widely known to be one of the most powerful bikes in production form, and one thing they aim for on the factory bike is harnessing that power and delivering it to the ground with maximum traction. Note the steel engine bracket, a personal preference of Dungey.

The team runs the WP Trax shock, but run the trax system locked out for Supercross due to the whoops. Note the ease of sag adjustment with the 10mm adjuster accessible, no hammers and punches needed here.

Of course the champ’s bike sits on a custom titanium stand, too.

Close up of what they will show us of the WP works air shock. This unit is still being fine tuned with both Millsaps and Short opting to run it on their race bikes. Brayton is still running the Trax Shock.

Jessy Nelson’s Troy Lee Designs Redbull KTM is led by the same signature Redbull logos as Dungey’s bike on the front fender. The team graphics are very well done, but that’s to be expected from Troy Lee, who is a known master of style.

This unique locking clip can be found on the fuel quick-disconnect to avoid any possibility of coming apart during a crash or any other scenario.

Fully custom linkages are created through hours of suspension testing. And no, they will not tell you what they measure.
