Timed qualifying has just concluded at the 2018 Anaheim One Supercross, the opening round of the 2018 Monster Energy Supercross Series. Riders in the 250 and 450 classes spent the entire afternoon figuring out the flow of the track that has been built inside Angel Stadium of Anaheim, and just as we expected, the pace of the front-runners is very fast and very close. Small fractions of time are all they separated riders in the results, which means that we should expect very exciting motos tonight when the real racing begins. Have a look at the images above, the results below, and other assorted news items from the day in Southern California.
250 CLASS | TIMED QUALIFYING RECAP & RESULTS
Defending 250 West Coast Supercross champion Justin Hill picked up exactly where he left off in 2017, as the AutoTrader/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing rider posted the fastest lap of the class. Hill’s speedy time came on the very last lap of the final practice session and will set the tone for tonight’s racing.
Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammates Adam Cianciarulo and Joey Savatgy spent the entire day near the top of the scoreboard. The two riders held the top spot at various points in the day, and many assumed that Cianciarulo was going to be the top qualifier until Hill’s last lap.
A small endo in the final practice didn’t seem to slow Shane McElrath down, as the Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM rider remounted and put in a quick lap later in the session.
Fastest rider under the Monster Energy/Yamalube/Star/Yamaha Factory Racing tent? Mitchell Oldenburg, who logged speedy laps all day and was fifth overall in the final results.
450 CLASS | TIMED QUALIFYING RECAP & RESULTS
Ken Roczen’s return to racing is on a great path so far. The Team Honda HRC rider looked a bit more controlled than in the past, but still managed to log the fastest lap of the 450 class midway through the final practice session.
Surprisingly, Eli Tomac’s fastest lap came in the first session of the day. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider was the fastest person in that outing and up until Roczen’s lap, was going to be the fastest of the class.
Justin Barcia’s looks like he’s returned to his old BamBam speed on the Monster Energy/Knich/Yamaha Factory Racing bike. At multiple moments Barcia was on the top of the board and at the end of the day, was ranked third overall.
Rockstar Energy Racing Husqvarna rider Jason Anderson was also one of the fastest riders of the day. His final ranking was fourth.
Red Bull KTM rider Marvin Musquin quietly logged the fifth fastest lap of the day.
Despite being on the entry list, Josh Hansen and Jake Weimer opted out of racing this weekend. Both are slated to return at Anaheim Two.
