Khao Nguyen has been fishing the Swan River in Perth, Australia, for years, but what he pulled from the water Friday was nothing like anything he’s ever caught before.

While fishing under the Narrows Bridge, Nguyen hooked into something heavy. Was it a catfish? A bull shark? A ray, perhaps?

“I was hoping to catch something and to my surprise I caught a gun,” the fisherman told Seven News Perth. “Normally you don’t expect to catch something like that.

“I cast out halfway through the channel and I start to reel it in slowly, and that’s when I hooked the gun, but I didn’t know it was a gun. I thought it was a fish.”

Instead of celebrating a fish, Nguyen immediately called police to report his bizarre catch, as reported by The West Australian and Seven News Perth:

Kensington detectives locked down the area and put the gun into an evidence bag. It did not have a magazine.

“It’s a public area used by a lot of people of all age ranges, children and likewise so our first priority is to lock down the area,” Kensington Detective Lloyd Stanton told Seven News Perth.

Police believe the gun was tossed off the bridge into the river. So the gun is being checked to determine whether it is linked to any recent crimes.

An initial examination seemed to indicate the gun is not capable of firing live rounds and is possibly a starter’s pistol. Further testing is being done.
