Just to date myself real quick, GT‘s Dead Sailor came out a year after I graduated high school in ’97. It featured a whole slew of mostly SoCal riders who I had been seeing in the pages of RideBMX mag for a few years prior, including Dave Voelker,Vic Murphy, Dave Young, Ken Hale, Gary Ellis, Trevor Meyer, Rob Nolli, Ruben Castillo, and more. At the time, my friends and I were super hyped on Dave Young. Dave had a lot of coverage in Ride around that time—most of it was him sending it down a bunch of wild gaps and rails for bike tests, yeah, bike tests… He was nuts. And this was some of his earliest footage (well before Nowhere Fast, which dropped in 2000). Beyond the Dave footage, for me, any Vic Murphy action is gold and there are a few of his iconic one-footed tables in here as well. With pioneering trickery and legendary riders, Dead Sailor became an inadvertent time capsule of SoCal BMX in the late 90s…
