While we’ve heard in recent months of people sabotaging mountain biking trails with logs and wires, a Northern California mountain biker recently came face-to-face with an entirely other trailside hazard, and crashed his bike full-speed into a black bear.

Davis Souza, a freeskier and mountain biker from Truckee, California, was riding his mountain bike on the Mills Peak Lookout Trail in the nearby town of Graeagle on Monday when a small black bear dashed across the trail directly in front of Souza’s bike.

As seen in the above video Souza collided with the bear and went over his handlebars, landing hard on the trail. By the time he had regained his composure, the small black bear was gone.

Though the video above is shaky, Souza was able to grab a still from it and brighten the frame to give his followers a better view of the critter who tackled him on his ride:

“Fun day blasting #millspeak with a good group,” Souza captioned his Instagram post. “Unfortunately this bear wanted to test my reflexes.”
