With the advancements in wearable technology, it has become commonplace for most snowboarders (and especially pros embarking on competitive runs) to be listening to music on the mountain.

And The New York Times investigated this very unique phenomenon to snow sports earlier this week. Noting, “Music has a unique role for snowboarders, many of whom not only listen to music to pump themselves up before the event, but also blast it during the actual competition to drown out the din around them.”

There’s some science to back it up, too. “Using music to relieve anxiety, to lift confidence, to create your own bubble where you block out the competition hullabaloo and media expectations that go with it — that all can be very useful,” Costas Karageorghis of Brunel University in London, who wrote the book “Applying Music in Exercise and Sport,” told The NY Times.

So, thanks to The NY Times, here are the tracks that some of the Olympic snowboarders were listening to when they dropped into their runs.

Arielle Gold – “8 Mile” by Eminem

“I always listen to Eminem when I'm snowboarding. I really like his lyrics. He fought an uphill battle, and sometimes it feels like that's what I'm doing. He overcame, and I can do the same.”

Ayumu Hirano – “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley

“It keeps my motivation up, and it's just as important to me as the snowboard. It calms me down.”

Kelly Clark – “Love Has A Name” by Jesus Culture

“I can’t control what the judges think or what the weather is doing or the tricks the other girls are doing. But I can control what I hear.”

Chloe Kim – “Paparazzi” by Lady Gaga

Chloe Kim simply told The NY Times that this song is “fun.”
