Fall is almost here and, for many parts of the country, here's hoping some cooler temperatures will arrive along with it.

This time of year, all those perfect autumn hikes are calling. And if you’re headed out, make sure you’re packing the proper fuel.

A great place to start is by whipping up some quick and easy bars, essential for stashing in your pack on early mornings and munching on throughout the day.

A healthier spin on your typical granola bar is always welcomed as long as it tastes good – and we can assure you this one passes that test. We’ve subbed honey in place of sugar and added cacao instead of your traditional cocoa powder. You can use this recipe as a base and add in any other elements (chopped pecans, dark chocolate chunks, cranberries) until your heart and tummy are content.

Travel Tip: Our favorite way to transport these are in resealable, reusable containers. You can find these at most camping and outdoor supply stores. We bought our set at REI.

Dawn Patrol Trail Bars

25-Minute Bake
Makes roughly 8 bars


– 1 cup peanut butter

– 3 cups rolled oats

– 1/4 cup chia seeds

– 1/2 cup honey

– 4 tbsp coconut oil

– 1/2 tsp sea salt

– 1/4 cup cacao powder

– 1/4 cup coconut shreds


– Heat oven to 325 degrees.

– Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.

– Press ingredients into a 9.5 x 13″ sheet pan (lined with parchment paper).

– Bake for 25 minutes.

– Remove from oven.

– Let cool completely, and then place in freezer to harden.

– Cut into individual rectangles and enjoy!
