A new crowdfunded campaign is looking to launch the first backpack that doubles as a personal electric vehicle. Called the Movpak, the owners claim the backpack unfolds in one movement into a wireless controlled skateboard that can travel up to 20 miles per hour. The Movpak will be retail for around $1200 and come in a range of colors.
The vehicle is electric and has a range of 10 miles per charge. The Movpak is operated by a hand held remote control with one touch buttons used for acceleration, braking and reversing.
While it’s not designed for the skatepark, your trips around a college campus, or through an airport (it can fold to fit as onboard luggage) could become a whole lot faster … and more fun.
The deck is made from a combination of wood, metal and Kevlar and weighs in at 17 lbs. While this is heavier than normal backpacks, it is around half the weight of a regular bike or other portable electric vehicles on the market.
Along with being the first backpack that you can ride, it comes with a brake, front headlights and anti-theft inbuilt tracking capability.
It also has a USB port so you can charge smartphones, tablets and other gadgets as well as a wireless smartphone charger. At the time of writing almost $150,000 has been raised from over 200 backers, with prototypes going into production.
