There are more iterations of sport bras on the market than there are actual sports. Which makes this little factoid all the more surprising: Kickstarter’s must-funded fashion campaign was for — wait for it — a sports bra.
It’s a wardrobe staple you’d think we might have figured out by now, considering it’s the first thing women put on everyday. But, as project creator, Joanna Griffiths explains it, there was still a huge gap in the market for a high performance, anti-microbial, anti-odor, moisture wicking, quick-dry sports bra that was both fashionable enough to wear to the office and functional enough to wear hiking after work.
“There are a ton of sports bras, and bras with underwires, on the market, but we wanted to create something in between that could do both,” says Knix Wear founder Joanna Griffiths. “Women want to be comfortable and they want to be wearing performance apparel around the clock.”
She was right, and her crowdfunding project surpassed its original $100,000 goal to collect a cool $1.4 million. Here’s what’s on the way: The Evolution bra, a wire-free, odorless, reversible sports bra that might just change the way you get dressed in the morning.
The Evolution bra is being touted as “the world’s most advanced bra” and was instantly endorsed by thousands of women and a slew of celebrities (even George Takei posted about it on Facebook). It’s seam free and comes in sizes 32A to 38DD, with two adjustable straps that allow you to wear it in eight different ways. It has no underwire, instead mimicking the effects with a special four-way stretch fit that conforms to your body the more you wear it.
“The design process took well over a year,” says Griffith. “We tackle one problem at a time. We had women from every size that we offer test out our bra, so it’s a bra that has evolved over time.”
The bra is meant to be lived in and transitions from office work to yoga. Cross the straps for more support and wear it to the rock gym. It’s so comfortable you can even sleep in it.
“We’ve designed the bra with the active woman in mind,” says Griffith. “It’s easy to pack, can be washed and will air dry in less than four hours. The best part about the Evolution bra is that you might forget you’re wearing it.”
The Evolution bra is set to retail for $55 and is available for pre-order now at knixwear.com.
