These days, there's a subscription box for everything. Health, beauty, fitness, books, food, hiking – you name it, it exists. After years of ads flooding the web and our social accounts, we decided it was time to jump on the bandwagon. We searched long and hard to find the best outdoor subscription boxes out there and put them to the test. Here are five of our favorites.

The Nomadik

How It Works

The folks at The Nomadik boldly claim that they offer the premier subscription box for adventure. Starting at $29.99 per month, Nomadik boxes are filled with innovative gear from premium brands alongside a monthly outdoor challenge. When you sign up, you'll fill out a profile and will receive specially curated gear based on your interests. In each box, you can expect to find organizational equipment, accessories, gear and tools, and fuel, valued at $70 or more.

Our Take

We received the September/October box, which included a Lux Pro flashlight, solar charger by KZ Gear, Survival Frog firestarter shoelaces, PopSocket smartphone tool, and number of brand discount codes. The Nomadik challenge of the month: find a spot in nature that you've never been before, adventure, and photograph the experience (five challenge winners receive $100 product bundles from The Nomdik). We liked the fact that this box allows you to design a profile so that you receive products specific to your tastes and needs. We also enjoyed the monthly challenge as a fun way of getting out and trying new things. Overall, we're big fans of this box and the gear that came along with it. Cairn

How It Works

The folks at Cairn are committed to helping you the discover the best-in-class outdoor gear through their monthly or quarterly subscription boxes. When you sign up, you'll pick which plan works best for you and then receive up to six products monthly, or 5-10 premium products quarterly. Each month or quarter is a surprise but you can expect to find apparel, gear, food/energy, skincare, and emergency equipment.

After you receive your box, you'll have the opportunity to review your new gear and receive points to use in the Cairn Shop for apparel, free boxes, or gifts for friends. In addition to top-notch boxes, Cairn offers a “Gear Up Give Back” program through which you can send in used gear to be fixed up and resold. All proceeds from pre-loved gear will be donated to The Conservation Alliance, so you can feel good about repurposing your gear and donating to a good cause.

Our Take

We received the quarterly Fall Obsidian box and were blown away by the amount of high-quality gear we received. At $249.95 per quarter, this box is definitely a higher pricepoint item, but for the over $300 in gear we received it was well worth it. Our box contained Lonely Planet's book, Epic Hikes of the World, a Black Diamond rainwear shell, the Osprey Transporter 65 bag/backpack, a Matador FlatPak toiletry bottle, and three fruit smoothie filled Clif Bars. The box was beautifully packaged and all of the items were perfect to add to our outdoor gear collection.

We appreciated the fact that Cairn offers two different box options, so you can pick whichever is best suited to your needs and budget. This box is the perfect option for anyone that enjoys spending time hiking, traveling, backpacking, and exploring the great outdoors.

Coastal Co.

How It Works

Coastal Co. is a quarterly subscription box designed with beach lovers in mind. To get started, you simply join the Co. and for $99 a season, you'll receive a box of 6-8, premium beach-inspired products delivered to your doorstep.

Men's and women's boxes are available and in each box you can expect to find apparel/accessories, jewelry, beach essentials, skin/hair products, coastal home décor, healthy/active lifestyle products, and plenty of good vibes. Each box is valued at over $200 and features popular surf brands such as Billabong, Nixon, Roxy, Tavik, All Good, Pura Vida Bracelets, and many more.

The folks at Coastal Co. value the ocean and keeping it clean, so proceeds from each box are donated to Heal the Bay to help fund beach cleanups and coastline protection initiatives.

Our Take

We received the Women's Winter Box and as regular beach-goers were very pleased with the contents. Our box contained an Alternative Apparel sweatshirt, Pirette dry body oil, Salty Cali shell necklace, Corduroy California mug, 3-pack of assorted teas, Krochet Kids Intl. knit beanie, Richer Poorer socks, and an Aloha 'Aina candle. The box was nicely packaged, making it a perfect option for a gift for the beach-goer in your life or a little self-love present. The items in the box were not only fun, but practical for the winter season and long days at the beach. We give it two shakas to the sky. Use code ASN20 for $20 off your first box.

The RunnerBox

How It Works

Founded by an elite runner in 2013, The RunnerBox is on a mission to introduce athletes to the best products while simultaneously promoting and supporting active lifestyles. Delivered every other month, the box comes packed with 11-14 hand-picked items tested by a team of athletes.

For $20, you'll receive $40-$60 worth of top of the line healthy snacks and accessories for endurance athletes. In addition to running themed boxes, cycle-themed and triathlon-themed boxes are offered as well and follow a similar format.

Our Take

We received the October/November box which included a two-week access pass to bulldogyoga, watch band liners, Xpand lacing system, and Rockay premium socks. In addition to these fun accessories, we also received a variety of nutritious snacks including energy bars, electrolyte bites, oatmeal, and much more. The box was literally filled to the brim and offered a variety of different snacks to suit all tastes.

Where most snacks geared towards athletes are loaded with sugar and other junk, these were made from natural, healthy ingredients. Many of the products were ones we might not normally buy, but it was a fun way to try something different and discover new brands to add to our shopping list. Day-to-day training can get monotonous at times — this box helps add some life to your workout and reminds you to have fun in the process.

Alpha Outpost

How It Works

Alpha Outpost is the outdoor subscription box designed to enhance your outdoor survival skills. Each month, a variety of outdoor gear and survival-themed products are delivered to your doorstep. Past boxes have included a marooned box, a fire starter box, a hydration themed box, a hideout box, and many more. They have a number of different options to choose from: Current Box, Monthly Mystery Box, or a $5 First Box.

Our Take

We received the Torch Box, aka the fire starter box. In our kit we found multiple tools that could be used to help start a fire: torch, ferro rod, foldable tree saw, fiber light, storm proof matches, torch patch, and some other nifty goodies. A number of these items may be a little excessive for basic fire starting but if you spend a good amount of time camping or in the backcountry, you'll definitely want some storm proof matches, flint/steel, and a portable saw in your arsenal. This box is a fun way to practice different survival skills and try out some new equipment to pack along on your next adventure.
